Irene ThompsonIrene Thompson (BS, MS Georgetown, PhD George Washington) is Professor Emerita, George Washington University, where she taught Russian language and linguistics and served as chair of the Slavic Department from 1968 to 1995. She also taught at Cornell, Bryn Mawr, Middlebury, and University of Hawai'i, and spent two years as supervising linguist of the Russian program at the Foreign Service Institute. Since her retirement from teaching in 1995, she has been serving as senior consultant at the National Foreign Language Resource Center of the University of Hawai'i, as language consultant to The Technology Development Group, and as co-editor of the journal Language Learning & Technology. She lives with her husband Richard Thompson in Round Hill, Virginia.


Scott CobleScott Coble (BS Virginia Tech, MS Johns Hopkins) is a Project Manager and Software Engineer with the Technology Development Group where he has worked with Dr.Thompson since 2004 developing the About World Languages (AWL) website. In addition, he has managed and designed numerous other applications and systems, including the U.S. Air Force's Sustainment Curriculum Portfolio, the Intelligence Community language portal (LANTERN) and the Technology Development Group portal. His focus on AWL has been on design and Section 508, XML and XHTML compliance. He lives with his wife Monika in Falls Church, VA.



* This project was initiated by Dr. Kathleen Egan in 2004 in her Technology Director position at the National Virtual Translation Center. Her leadership inspired the project to celebrate the 2005 Year of Languages and highlight the diversity and depth of world languages.
